In the spring of 2025, Muhka presented the first retrospective exhibition of Belgian avant-garde artist Hugo Roelandt. Through his social engagement and technical innovation, he continues to influence the international art world today.

‘King of Klowns’, the first major overview exhibition of Nástio Mosquito — on view in autumn 2024 at Muhka — took us on a journey of invention. A confrontation with personalities who challenged us to navigate an even more complex world.

‘The Lives of Animals’ was on view in summer 2024 at M HKA. The exhibition explored how visual artists reflect on and question our relationship with animals. Can we adopt an animal perspective?

In spring 2024, M HKA presented a major solo exhibition by Jim Shaw. The Ties That Bind brought together recent works and key pieces from his practice, rich with references to American pop culture and ideological tensions.

In autumn 2023, M HKA presented a major retrospective of Dorothy Iannone. ‘Love Is Forever, Isn’t It?’ highlighted the performative, narrative, and erotic aspects of her work, inviting visitors on an emancipatory journey through love, spirituality, and self-expression.

In summer 2023, M HKA transformed into a playful space for all ages. ‘Let’s Play Museum’, curated with a class of 9-year-olds, invited visitors to experience art in imaginative and interactive ways — from bowling and swinging to hide-and-seek and beyond.

‘Flowers on the Sun’ was the first Belgian solo exhibition by Berlin-based Polish artist Agnieszka Polska. The exhibition featured a selection of works, including her film ‘The Book of Flowers’ (2023), created using AI tools.

In summer 2024, M HKA presented the first institutional solo exhibition of Vedran Kopljar. Through paintings, language, and game structures, Kopljar explored how meaning emerges, shifts, or dissolves. The exhibition functioned as a closed system of contradictory logics, where language, rules, and personal reflection constantly challenge one another.

In spring 2024, M HKA presented Viktor Brim’s solo exhibition ‘Beyond the Depths’. Brim’s immersive video installations examine how power, ideology, and natural resources converge in the landscape. Featuring footage from mining sites in Siberia and Germany, his work reflects on geological time, extraction, and energy. His films are quiet, intense, and deeply philosophical.

In summer 2024, M HKA presented works by Elene Chantladze and Rooms Studio. Her paintings and drawings entered into dialogue with sculptural structures by the design duo. Together, they explored interior space as a site for imagination and emancipation. Part of the In Situ programme and europalia georgia.

In summer 2023, M HKA presented RE:ANKER, Ignace Cami’s first solo museum show. Through sculpture, performance and installation, he reimagined heritage and folk culture for today.

In spring 2023, M HKA presented a new installation by Tenant of Culture, the artistic practice of Hendrickje Schimmel. Using discarded garments and industrial materials, she created a monumental sculpture reflecting on the circulation of fashion, labour, and waste.

In summer 2022, Muhka presented ‘Anamnesis’, a solo exhibition by Tarik Kiswanson. Through sculpture, video, performance, sound and poetry, Kiswanson explored themes like memory, identity, and uprooting. Central to the show was the idea of levitation, both physical and mental.

In 2025, M HKA presents a focused collection display featuring some thirty key works by Flemish and international artists. Starting from the post-war avant-garde in Antwerp, the show explores how art engages with image, action and society in a world in flux.

“Sculptors and scholars, who knows anything about the stars?” This question from Panamarenko’s first collage sets the tone for ‘Journey to the stars’. The presentation explores his fascination with the cosmos through drawings, models and archival material, merging imagination and technological experimentation.

With The City Collection: In/sight, M HKA celebrated Antwerp as a hub for contemporary art. The presentation brought together works from the Stadscollectie Antwerpen, with a focus on artists who played a prominent role in the local gallery scene. The city’s international character was reflected in the diversity of the works.

In spring 2024, M HKA presented ‘Chronology of Tears’ by Edith Dekyndt, a poetic installation exploring matter, light, and transformation. Through projection, video, and a copper-coated blanket, Dekyndt traces the visible and invisible energies shaping our world.

In spring 2024, M HKA presented a selection of works by Willy De Sauter (1938), who has explored the foundations of art for over 50 years. His practice is marked by stylistic consistency and formal restraint. The exhibition gathered early key works, ranging from line-based drawings to spatial pieces with subtle architectural references.

In summer 2025, M HKA presented an archival exhibition on Today’s Place, a 1970s experimental Antwerp art space where art, music, and performance merged in a spirit of rebellion and youthful energy.

In autumn 2024, M HKA presented an archival exhibition on Art Systems in Latin America, a groundbreaking travelling show from 1974–75 that introduced new forms of artistic mobility and political engagement in Europe.

The exhibition ‘Opting for art’ revisited three influential contemporary art shows from the Visual Arts programme of Antwerp ’93, Cultural Capital of Europe. Through archival material, it reflected on their role and relevance in Belgian art history more than thirty years on.

In summer 2023, M HKA presented an archival exhibition on Marcel van Maele, the rebellious writer and artist known for his playful fusion of language and objects. The show was prompted by a donation of 25 assemblages and multiples from a private collection.

In spring 2023, M HKA presented MULTI / ART / PAPER / PRESS / GALLERY, an archival exhibition about the influential Antwerp-based venture (1969–1970) by Paul Ibou and Liliane‑Emma Staal, showcasing their multiples, posters, flyers and paper-art objects .

In spring 2022, M HKA presented an archival exhibition on British avant-garde artist Marlow Moss, featuring rare drawings, documents and a documentary exploring her life and legacy in the Dutch region of Zeeland.

In spring 2022, M HKA presented an archival exhibition on Mark Verstockt and Io Van Oostveldt, offering insight into their geometric and constructivist practice and the artistic dialogue between them.
