Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen — 20 Years and More: Works from the Collection

Carla Arocha (b. 1961, Caracas, Venezuela) and Stéphane Schraenen (b. 1971, Antwerpen) have formed an artist duo for more than twenty years. Through sculpture, painting, photography and installation, they explore how space, reflection and perception shape our gaze. Their work invites us to look critically.

The first room presents their individual trajectories and early collaboration. Screen (2005) by Carla Arocha consists of six suspended semi-transparent screens that play with light, movement and viewers like a mobile. Sleeping Room (1999–2024) by Stéphane Schraenen comes from the series What I Don’t See at Night. In these abstract nocturnal cityscapes, darkness, colour and reflection come together. The screen print Persiana (2014) by Arocha & Schraenen refers to blinds in front of a window. Looking, or being looked at?

The new installation Landscape (Antwerp) (2026) occupies the round room. Arocha & Schraenen have transformed the colour scheme of a city view into monumental planes of colour. The accompanying reflective structures capture light, colour and movement, projecting them back into the space. Architecture, surroundings and viewers actively become part of a continuously changing experience.
