UNLABELED. FIVE BELGIAN GRAPHIC DESIGN ARCHIVES

Film

15 May 2026

On Friday 15 May 2026, Muhka and De Cinema present the Antwerp premiere of UNLABELED. FIVE BELGIAN GRAPHIC DESIGN ARCHIVES. Filmmaker Laura De Baudringhien follows five Belgian graphic designers through their archives and examines what happens to creative heritage when it is not preserved.

What happens to the creative memory of a graphic designer?

In UNLABELED. FIVE BELGIAN GRAPHIC DESIGN ARCHIVES, five Belgian graphic designers exceptionally open the doors to their archives. The film visits Miche Wynants, Michel Olyff, Luk Mestdagh, Base Design and Atelier Brenda. The documentary takes us on a visual journey through workspaces, storage areas, archive cabinets and digital folders full of decades of graphic design.

As a viewer, you delve into material that often remains outside public view: sketches, printed matter, designs, files and traces of working processes. The film shows the sometimes urgent drive to preserve creative heritage in an age of digital transience.

UNLABELED is both an exploration and a quiet urgency: a reflection on what we preserve, what inevitably disappears and which stories remain visible or are lost as a result.

20:00 | De Cinema | 30 min | Spoken language: Dutch, French, English | Subtitles: Dutch, English

The Antwerp premiere of UNLABELED. FIVE BELGIAN GRAPHIC DESIGN ARCHIVES will be introduced by filmmaker Laura De Baudringhien.

The film asks a simple but fundamental question: “Is what is not preserved lost forever?” From this question, UNLABELED explores the archives of five Belgian graphic designers and design practices. The documentary shows how graphic work is made, stored, forgotten, rediscovered and given new meaning.

Admission is free, reservation required via De Cinema.

Context

The screening takes place during Antwerp Art Weekend and connects with the current archive presentation Nueva Visión. Print as Artistic Practice (1940-1976) at Muhka.

Where Nueva Visión examines printed matter as a space for experiment, exchange and social engagement, UNLABELED focuses on the question of how graphic design as a practice is preserved. Both start from archives, but do not only look back. They show how material from the past can circulate and be read again today.
