M HKA’s Autumn
The M HKA has a new season of exhibitions in store for you. This autumn we turn inward. Terms such as intimacy, sexuality, ‘floating, flying, taking off ‘, connection and identity: it promises to be a sultry late summer … With some activities on the calendar to suit the action to the word.

Dorothy Iannone – Love is Forever, Isn’t It?
Love, sexuality and emotions are hot topics in our Dorothy Iannone retrospective. This is the first exhibition of Iannone’s work since her death at the end of last year, and she has intensively helped to prepare the project. Iannone has many paintings, artist’s books, video installations, sculptures and sound works to her name. The artist always emphasises narrative. In the past, she was sometimes confronted with censorship; today, we show her erotic iconography without further ado. Through it, she passionately depicts her intimate friendships and relationships with artists and lovers. All this, we view through the lens of the intrinsically performative nature of Iannone’s work.
IN SITU: Elene Chantladze & Nata Janberidze / Keti Toloraia (Rooms Studio) – europalia georgia
The IN SITU space on the ground floor, also known as the puntzaal (point or pointy room ), is the largest and most atypical location in the museum. An excellent opportunity for a joint exhibition by two parties who emphasise the importance of interior, and by extension interiority, in their work. A large selection of drawings and paintings by Elene Chantladze enter into dialogue with display and support structures designed by Rooms Studio. Art and interior flow into each other. And we are reminded of how essential a space can be for personal development, freedom and inspiration .
Archive and Collection Presentations
Also on the ground floor are two exhibitions with work from our own collection and an archive exhibition, which, as the word suggests, looks back in time.
‘Choosing art‘ takes you back to Antwerp 93. More specifically to three exhibitions of contemporary art that were part of the project via which Antwerp was allowed to call itself European C apital of Culture .
As far as the collection exhibitions are concerned, we would first like to dig out some of Panamarenko’s pearls from our depots. Among other things, the Prova Car, a masterpiece of the Flemish Community Collection, is on display. We are not done yet – talking about Belgium’s most beloved artist-inventor. This autumn, a collection presentation will bring together several of his ‘transport objects’. Find out here which works of art are involved.
Recently, the M HKA also acquired Brine Lake (A New Body), a video and sound installation by artist Shen Xin. Fiction and history overlap in this story about migration, collective memory, statelessness and belonging.
EXTRA MUROS
The M HKA likes to show its collection in a different way. This fall, you can go to Z33 in Hasselt. In ‘This Is Us’ , work from the collections of the four largest Flemish museums for contemporary art is shown as a whole for the very first time. Featuring pieces by nearly fifty artists, more than half of whom live and work in Belgium.
Activiteiten
Apart from our regular activities – think of late night evenings every last Thursday of the month, walking talks and a guide in the Salon on Sunday – our calendar also features various events.
On Sunday 10 September, it’s Open Monuments Day. That day we open the Panamarenko House, where you can take part in a guided tour every hour. Unfortunately, all places for these tours have already been taken. Good news though: until the end of the year you can book a tour of the Panamarenko House every Saturday afternoon. Reserve quickly!
Thursday evening 5 October we throw open our doors to the public: to start off the season together – and well – museum entrance is free. That evening, over a drink, you can discover a whole new range of exhibitions. We will end the evening in Zuiderpershuis with some dance moves.
Also this year, we are participating in the 12th edition of Arts Day for Children. Note down Sunday 19 November in your calendar, as family day at the M HKA.
November is also book month and the reading week is on the agenda, so we will organise some reading sessions, both in the M HKA and in the Panamarenko House. The publication accompanying the Dorothy Iannone exhibition is also expected. No shortage of reading material!
We also received a question from some enthusiastic children and their parents : Can one already register for the coming holiday workshops? You can! During the Christmas season, we promise to once again transform the museum into an arts and potter paradise for our kids. Places are limited, so book quickly!
