FRONT ROW with Vedran Kopljar

Before the summer break, Vedran Kopljar will close the first series of FRONT ROW with an artist talk sharing a deep dive into his practice and MEAN, his first institutional solo exhibition, currently on view at M HKA.

Creating and cultivating meaning stand at the heart of Vedran Kopljar’s art. In his practice—which includes painting, video, performance and words— the Antwerp based artist continuously searches for and experiments with different systems used to create meaning.

“As facetious as it may be, meaning as an entity has oftentimes struck me as being mean – mean-natured. Meaning is mean-natured, is what I want to propose. I question what it is to be -natured and so I drift into questions of what is cultivated and civilized. Probably because I want to think about cultivation and civilization. Maybe I am being mean in proposing meaning to be mean-natured. Notice how I don’t question myself being mean-natured and only question if I was temporarily being mean to a certain entity. This event is organised as part of FRONT ROW, a monthly series of artist’s talks jointly organised by M HKA and NICC. Serving as an open format to artists – whether a talk, a presentation of an idea ora lecture performance – the programme offers the opportunity to reflect on art, culture and society from the specific perspective of some of the most thought-provoking artists practising today. The talks are the ideal occasion to meet artists, and to consider their ideas and propositions.

FRONT ROW is co-organised by M HKA and the artist-run platform NICC through a shared basis in supporting artists, nurturing international perspectives, and being generators of discussion. M HKA and NICC warmly welcome you to this monthly series of discussions.
